The Scenic "Whiskey Route" with High Altitude Acclimatization & High Summit Success
The 6-Day Machame Route, affectionately known as the "Whiskey Route," is widely recognized as one of the most popular and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting south of the mountain at Machame Gate, the trail ascends through lush rainforests before traversing high moorlands, rocky ridges, and alpine desert landscapes below the southern icefields.
A key advantage of the Machame Route is its built-in acclimatization profile. On Day 3, hikers climb to high altitude at Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp (3,900m)—following the proven high-altitude training principle of "climb high, sleep low." The trail features dynamic terrain changes, including the thrilling climb up the famous Barranco Wall, culminating in a powerful summit push from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet our representative for a comfortable transfer to your hotel in Moshi. In the afternoon or evening, you will meet your head guide for a full briefing on the route, altitude safety protocols, and a comprehensive gear inspection to ensure you have all essential mountain equipment before starting the climb.
Drive from Moshi through picturesque agricultural villages to Machame Gate for registration formalities. Begin your ascent through thick, mossy rainforest. Listen for bird calls and look out for Colobus monkeys in the canopy. Reach Machame Camp late in the afternoon, where your tents will be set up for your first night on the mountain.
Leave the rainforest behind and climb along a rising ridge into the heath and moorland zone. Cross rocky paths and giant heather fields to reach the vast Shira Plateau. From Shira Cave Camp, enjoy magnificent panoramic views across the plateau, Kibo Peak, and Mount Meru rising in the distant horizon.
Trek eastward across the alpine desert plateau, ascending to the towering volcanic structure of Lava Tower (4,600m) for lunch and altitude adaptation. After resting at this high elevation, descend through the Barranco Valley to Barranco Camp (3,900m). This crucial "climb high, sleep low" day is instrumental for successful acclimatization.
Begin the morning with a scrambling hike up the exhilarating Barranco Wall—a non-technical but fun climb rewarding you with sweeping views. Continue across alpine gullies and traverse the Karanga Valley before taking the steep trail up to Barafu Camp. Settle in, eat an early high-carbohydrate dinner, and rest before your midnight summit attempt.
Wake around 11:30 PM for tea and light snacks before starting the intense midnight summit push over steep volcanic scree. Reach Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim as sunrise paints the sky. Continue for another hour past majestic glaciers to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa! After celebrating and capturing photos, descend back to Barafu Camp for a rest and warm meal before continuing down to Millennium Camp for overnight stay.
Descend through the lush rainforest trails to Mweka Gate. Complete final park exit formalities and collect your official summit certificates (Green for Stella Point, Gold for Uhuru Peak). Sing and celebrate with your mountain crew before driving back to Moshi for a hot shower, relaxation, and celebration drinks.
