Maximum Acclimatization & Scenic Wilderness Ascent to Uhuru Peak
The 8-Day Lemosho Route is widely considered the gold standard for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. By adding an extra day on the high-altitude plateau with a stopover at Moir Hut Camp (4,160m), this extended itinerary dramatically improves body adaptation to high elevations, leading to summit success rates over 95%.
Starting on the tranquil western side of the mountain at Londorossi Gate, climbers trek through untouched rainforest, traverse the expansive Shira Plateau, and hike beneath the volcanic towers of Lent Group before joining the iconic Southern Circuit past Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Karanga Valley.

Pickup from your Moshi hotel after breakfast followed by a 2-hour drive to Londorossi Gate for permit registration. Drive to the trailhead and begin hiking through quiet, dense rainforest. Spot wildlife like Colobus monkeys and blue monkeys before reaching Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp for dinner and rest.
Ascend out of the forest canopy into giant heather and moorland zones. Climb over Shira Ridge to enter the high-altitude Shira Plateau, opening up clear views of Kibo Peak across the horizon. Trek across the plateau to camp at Shira 2.
Trek east across rocky semi-desert terrain toward Moir Hut Camp, located at the base of Lent Hills. Moir Camp provides a peaceful high-altitude haven off the main tourist circuit. Optional short afternoon walk up Lent Hills assists in extra elevation adaptation.
Climb up toward Lava Tower at 4,630m for a critical "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization session. After resting and enjoying lunch near the tower, descend through giant senecio plant forests down into Barranco Valley underneath Barranco Wall.
Conquer the non-technical scramble up the 150m Barranco Wall using hands and feet. Enjoy panoramic ridge views from the top before descending across alpine valleys to Karanga Camp. This shorter hiking day gives your legs ample rest before higher elevations.
Leave Karanga Camp and ascend the junction connecting with Mweka Trail. Trek up through barren alpine desert landscapes to reach Barafu Base Camp. Prepare summit gear, eat an early dinner, and get into sleeping bags early ahead of the midnight summit push.
Wake up around 11:30 PM for warm tea and snacks before starting the summit climb at 1:00 AM. Ascend steep scree switchbacks past Stella Point (5,756m) to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise. Take commemorative photos at the highest point in Africa, then descend to Barafu for lunch and continue down to Mweka Camp for the night.
Final descent through lush rainforest down to Mweka Gate. Receive your official summit certificates, bid farewell to your mountain crew, and enjoy private transport back to your Moshi hotel for a celebratory hot shower.
