The Classic "Coca-Cola Route" – Sleeping Huts & Gradual Slopes
The Marangu Route, affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola Route," holds the distinction of being the oldest and most established path up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is unique among all Kilimanjaro routes as the only approach providing A-frame mountain hut accommodation rather than camping tents, offering shelter and dining areas throughout the ascent.
| Starting Point | Marangu Gate (1,870m / 6,135ft) |
|---|---|
| Ending Point | Marangu Gate (1,870m / 6,135ft) |
| Recommended Duration | 5 or 6 Days (6 Days recommended for acclimatization) |
| Total Trekking Distance | Approximately 64 km (40 miles) |
| Accommodation Type | Sleeping Huts (Mandara, Horombo & Kibo) |
| Difficulty Rating | Moderate (Requires good physical stamina for summit night) |
Your trek begins at the southeastern Marangu Gate. The path starts with a gentle walk through deep, vibrant rainforest to Mandara Hut (2,720m), where colobus monkeys and unique tropical flora are often spotted.
The trail soon emerges above the tree line into open heathland, leading to Horombo Hut (3,720m). On the recommended 6-day itinerary, an extra acclimatization day is spent at Horombo Hut with a side hike toward Mawenzi Ridge, significantly increasing altitude adaptation before moving to Kibo Hut (4,720m).
The final summit push begins shortly after midnight from Kibo Hut, climbing steep scree paths up to Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From there, climbers press forward along the snow-dusted rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) before descending back down to Horombo Hut and eventually Marangu Gate.
