6-Day Marangu Route Trek

The Classic "Coca-Cola" Route with Extra Acclimatization at Zebra Rocks

6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trekking

Route Overview & Experience

The 6-Day Marangu Route is widely regarded as the optimal way to trek Mount Kilimanjaro via the historic "Coca-Cola Route." While the standard 5-day itinerary can feel rushed, adding a dedicated acclimatization day on Day 3 significantly boosts your altitude adaptation and summit success rate.

Marangu is the only route on Kilimanjaro that provides A-frame mountain hut accommodations with standard single/double bunk beds and thick mattresses. This makes it an ideal option during the rainy seasons or for trekkers who prefer sleeping indoors over camping in tents. The path features a steady, gradual slope as it ascends through lush rainforests, open moorlands, and the vast alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

Key Highlights of the 6-Day Marangu Tour

  • Dedicated Acclimatization Day: Hike up to Zebra Rocks (4,020m) and return to Horombo Hut for rest, drastically improving altitude adaptation.
  • Comfortable Hut Lodging: Stay indoors in solar-powered huts with dining facilities and basic amenities throughout the ascent.
  • Gradual Slope Terrain: Smooth, well-established pathways suitable for steady-paced endurance walking.
  • Panoramic Excursions: Visit Maundi Crater for sweeping views across Northern Tanzania and the Kenyan borderlands.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where our driver will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi town. In the late afternoon, you will meet your professional mountain guide for a thorough briefing on the route, safety protocols, and a comprehensive check of your hiking gear. Any missing items can be hired locally before the climb.

Transfer Distance: 35 km | Time: Approx. 1 hr | Meals: Bed & Breakfast

After breakfast at your hotel, drive to Marangu Gate for park registration formalities. Begin hiking through the dense montane rainforest. Keep your eyes open for troops of black-and-white Colobus monkeys and vibrant tropical birds. After reaching Mandara Hut, take a short side walk to Maundi Crater for striking panoramic views of the Kenyan borderlands.

Distance: 8.3 km (5.2 miles) | Hike Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Rainforest | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Guide Tips: Stay hydrated by drinking 3–4 liters of water daily. Pace yourself ("Pole Pole") to allow your body to adapt smoothly to the rising elevation.

Emerge from the forest shelter into the heath and moorland vegetation zone. As you trek across giant lobelias and groundsels, enjoy magnificent views of Mawenzi Peak, Kibo Peak, and the vast Maasai Steppe below. Arrive at Horombo Hut by afternoon to settle into your dormitory and rest.

Distance: 12.5 km (7.8 miles) | Hike Time: 6–8 hours | Habitat: Moorland | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This extra day is crucial for successful acclimatization ("climb high, sleep low"). After a relaxed breakfast, take a 4-hour return hike up to the distinctive Zebra Rocks (4,020m), named after their natural black-and-white striped volcanic geology. Return to Horombo Hut for a warm lunch, rest, and relax during the afternoon.

Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles) | Hike Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Moorland | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Trek steadily past the "Last Water Point" into the bleak alpine desert terrain known as the "Saddle"—the wide plateau spanning between Mawenzi and Kibo. Reach Kibo Hut by early afternoon, enjoy a high-carbohydrate dinner, and turn in early to rest before midnight.

Distance: 9.5 km (5.9 miles) | Hike Time: 6–7 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Wake up around 11:30 PM for light refreshments before starting the steep, midnight zigzag ascent over scree toward Hans Meyer Cave (5,220m) and Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. Watch the sunrise break over the horizon, then continue for 1–2 hours along the snowy rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the Roof of Africa! Celebrate, snap photos, then descend back to Kibo Hut for lunch and a short break before continuing down to Horombo Hut for overnight sleep.

Distance: 22 km (13.7 miles) | Hike Time: 12–15 hours | Habitat: Arctic / Summit Zone | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Descend through the moorland zone down to Mandara Hut for a warm lunch stop. Continue through the lush tropical forest to Marangu Gate. Collect your official climbing certificates (Green for Gilman’s Point, Gold for Uhuru Peak), bid farewell to your crew, and drive back to Moshi for a warm shower and celebration dinner.

Distance: 20.8 km (12.9 miles) | Hike Time: 7–8 hours | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
